𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲

Financial Insight Zambia successfully hosted an impactful energy reporting workshop at AfricaWorks’ Agora Village in Lusaka, aimed at equipping journalists with enhanced competencies in covering the energy sector. The event brought together media practitioners and energy sector experts who shared invaluable insights to improve storytelling in energy journalism.

The workshop featured a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Ms. Sibeso Mofya, a financial markets professional, and welcomed a distinguished line-up of expert speakers from Zambia with global reach:

Dr. Chikoma Kazunga, Head of Business Development & New Ventures at Africa GreenCo, offered deep insights into renewable energy, Africa GreenCo /  GreenCo Power Services’s business model, and the complexities of scaling solar both globally and in Zambia. He also shared valuable perspectives on the securitisation of energy technologies.

Dr. John Kunda, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Konkola Copper Mines, stressed the importance of simplifying technical communication to foster public understanding, aptly noting that “communication is the exchange of meaning.”

Nkandu Machungwa, Vice President – Energy Infrastructure and Real Estate Finance, Corporate and Investment Banking at Stanbic Bank Zambia, offered a financial sector perspective on driving energy infrastructure development.

Mr. Mutinta M. Lunda, Energy Markets Consultant, traced the evolution of Zambia’s power sector - highlighting missed investment opportunities and advocating for strategic consideration of baseload options, particularly for the energy-intensive mining industry.

Mr. Emmanuel Kalenga, Managing Director of Empower Zambia Ltd, presented on the 330kV high-voltage transmission line- a project with a projected investment of approximately a quarter of a billion dollars. Once operational, the line will significantly strengthen Zambia’s role in regional energy security via the Southern African Power Pool.

We were honoured to be joined by Ms. Mukwandi Chibesakunda, Matron of University of Zambia Business and Economics Association - UNZABECA and CEO of Zanaco, who graced the event as Guest of Honour. UNZABECA played an active role throughout the day - engaging with speakers, posing thoughtful questions, and contributing meaningfully to the conversation on energy.

A special highlight of the day was the recognition of the top three winners of an energy-focused writing competition. The winners collectively received K19,000 in awards for their outstanding reporting- courtesy of Financial Insight CEO Mwelwa Kenneth Chibesakunda and the strong and reliable support of Zanaco, which went all out in putting students FIRST.

This workshop marks an important step in equipping media professionals with the knowledge and context required to effectively report on Zambia’s energy challenges, opportunities, and investment ecosystem.
